Exciting Layover in Amsterdam – Itinerary
Are you heading on a trip and have a layover in Amsterdam? If so, you’ve come to the right place! Below are the top things to do during a layover in Amsterdam.
I went on a trip to South East Asia a little while ago and I had an 8h layover in Amsterdam. Instead of staying in the airport all day, I decided to go explore the city, because why not?!
Less than 24h, may not seem like a long time but it’s plenty of time to get a sneak peek of the city. Here are some ideas of what you can do on your next trip!

Canals
First things first, you can’t visit Amsterdam and not go see some canals. Amsterdam’s inner canal ring is considered a UNESCO Heritage Site since 2010. This means they are maintained in accordance with international rules to preserve their historical and cultural significance.
There are no specific canals to go see as you will find canals all over the city. There are over 160 canals, that cover over 100km when combined. Amsterdam is sometimes also nicknamed “Venice of the North” for this reason.
Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum is located at the Museum Square, in Amsterdam South. It contains over one million artworks and displays close to 8,000 objects at a time. This museum is dedicated to Dutch arts and history. If you plan to visit the national museum of the Netherlands, make sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy the art as there can be large lines, depending on when you go.
I Amsterdam sign
This isn’t an activity everyone will want to do but I’ll mention it as if you’re like me you want a picture with the sign to say you’ve been to Amsterdam. Haha
There are a few locations that have this sign. This picture was taken in front of the Amsterdam Eye Museum. In my opinion, this location was the easiest to get to as you only need to take a short ferry from Centraal Station to Amsterdam Noord.
Anne Frank House
The Anne Frank House is the house of writer and Jewish wartime diarist Anne Frank. The museum explained the life of Anne Frank and her family through pictures, original items, and videos. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to personally visit the museum since I didn’t get tickets in time. If you are planning to visit this famous museum, you will need to buy tickets months in advance as it’s often sold out, so plan ahead!
